फॅशन म्हणून पालकांनी मुलांना इंग्रजी माध्यमाच्या शाळेत घालू नये – डॉ. अनिल काकोडकर

ज्ञानभाषा म्हणून इंग्रजी भाषेचे महत्त्व कितीही असले तरी प्राथमिक शिक्षण हे मुलांच्या मातृभाषेतूनच झाले पाहिजे. फॅशन म्हणून पालकांनी मुलांना इंग्रजी माध्यमाच्या शाळेत घालू नये. कारण मातृभाषा हे हेच शिक्षणाचे स्वाभाविक माध्यम असून त्याच भाषेतून मुलांचा सर्वागीण विकास होऊ शकतो, असे प्रतिपादन ज्येष्ठ शास्त्रज्ञ डॉ. अनिल काकोडकर यांनी केले.

Blame it on RTE: Rural students cannot read (DNA, 17 Jan 2012)

The report revealed that 51.1% students cannot read standard II level text, nearly 73.7% cannot do division while 71.5% cannot do basic subtraction.

The learning curves of reading and arithmetic have plunged drastically in 2011 compared to 2010.

This news report is closely related to the one about education in Namibia published just a couple of days back in ‘The Guardian’, UK. Forcing a foreign language by suppressing of the regional tongue can never fetch better results. Ask any educationist.

Up to 30 languages are spoken in Namibia, 14 of which have a full orthography (system of writing), but in 1990, when the country gained independence from South Africa, Afrikaans, which had functioned as a lingua franca, was jettisoned in favour of English.

Harris points to higher success rates of school students in South Africa and Botswana, two of Namibia’s neighbours where children learn in their home language.
