प्रास्ताविक: विज्ञानाच्या परिभाषेकरता इंग्रजी शब्द घ्यायला हरकत नसावी, असं पुष्कळ विद्वानांना वाटतं. एके काळी मलाही तसं वाटत असे. पण, जपानची अफाट प्रगती पाहिली आणि त्यामागचं विश्लेषण कळलं, तेव्हा वाटलं, “आपल्या विचारांत काही तरी घोटाळा आहे.” आणि पुनर्विचार सुरू केला. वरील मत व्यक्त करणारे वर असं सांगतात, “इंग्रजीनं नाही का अन्य भाषांतले शब्द स्वीकारले? मग आपल्याला काय हरकत? असे शब्द घेऊन इंग्रजी भाषा टणक झाली, तशी मराठी का होऊ नये?” हे प्रतिपादन मराठी भाषकांच्या मनात संभ्रम उत्पन्न करणारं असल्यानं त्याचा परामर्श घेणं अत्यावश्यक आहे.

स्वातंत्र्यपूर्व अखंड हिंदुस्थानची राष्ट्रभाषा म्हणून संस्कृताधारित हिंदी भाषा निवडली होती. स्वातंत्र्यलढ्याच्या काळात देशप्रेमाने भारावलेल्या वातावरणात संपूर्ण देशात हिंदीबद्दल राष्ट्रभाषा म्हणून ममत्वाची व आपुलकीची भावनाच होती. माझ्या ऐकीवाप्रमाणे अगदी मद्रास प्रांतातही काही हजार शाळांनी हिंदी विषय शिकवणे सुरू केले होते. पण स्वातंत्र्योत्तर काळात हिंदी राजकारण्यांनी जेव्हा जबरदस्तीने हिंदीचे वर्चस्व गाजवणे सुरू केले तेव्हा इतर हिंदीतर भाषक राज्ये बिथरली. आपल्या भाषेची पीछेहाट करून आपल्या डोक्यावर हिंदी लादायचा हा प्रयत्न आहे; अशी त्यांची भावना झाली. आणि या भावनेमुळे निर्माण झालेल्या त्यांच्या प्रतिक्रियेमुळे दक्षिणी, बंगाली व इतर भाषाभिमानी राज्यांनी हिंदीला विरोध करून तिला राष्ट्रभाषा म्हणून घोषित करण्याची योजना हाणून पाडली.
